Sculptra® Poly-L-Lactic Acid

General Information

Sculptra® is an injectable collagen biostimulator manufactured by Galderma. Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, it contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic polymer that works by stimulating the body’s natural collagen production.

Each vial contains 150 mg of poly-L-lactic acid, together with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (90 mg) and mannitol (127.5 mg). The product is supplied as a sterile dry powder and must be reconstituted with sterile water for injection before administration. A sterile lidocaine solution may optionally be added by the treating professional for injection comfort, in accordance with the applicable instructions for use.

Sculptra is designed to gradually improve facial volume, skin firmness and the appearance of wrinkles and folds. Results develop progressively as collagen production increases, rather than providing immediate volume replacement.

Indications

Sculptra may be used by qualified healthcare professionals for aesthetic correction and improvement, including:

• Correction of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
• Improvement of facial wrinkles and skin depressions.
• Restoration of volume in areas affected by facial fat loss.
• Improvement of skin firmness and overall skin quality.

Contraindications and Precautions

Sculptra should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to its ingredients or a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. Safety has not been established in pregnant or breastfeeding patients or individuals under 18 years of age.

Treatment should be postponed in areas with active skin infection or inflammation. The product must not be injected into blood vessels and should only be administered by appropriately trained healthcare professionals familiar with its preparation and injection requirements.

Potential Side Effects

Possible side effects include temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, bruising, itching and bleeding at the injection site. Small or larger lumps (nodules) may develop beneath the skin, sometimes appearing after a delay. Inflammation, uneven correction and other complications may also occur.
