General Information
BOTOX, also known as Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein that is used to relax the facial muscles. The effects of the treatment work to soften the appearance of fine to deep facial wrinkles, creating a smoother-looking appearance. The active constituent in Botox is a protein complex, derived from Clostridium botulinum. Intramuscular injection prevents the release of acetylcholine, preventing muscular contraction of the targeted area.
Indications for Botox Injections
Crow’s feet under the eyes
Mimic wrinkles in the areas of the forehead and between the eyebrows
Purse-string folds
Ptosis of the upper eyelid
Lowering of the corners of the lips
Asymmetry, “floating” face oval
The drug is available as a powder in 50 and 100 units. Injections are performed into the muscle, while correction in the area of the eyes and the perioral zone. Botulinum Botox is injected subcutaneously and intradermally. The procedure is recommended for patients aged 25 to 65 years.
Contraindications
You can`t use BOTOX 100IU in case of allergic reaction to any Botulinum Type A product or if you have skin infection. Most botulinum neurotoxin products have passed numerous clinical trials and achieved FDA certificates. Therefore, they are safe and do not tend to cause any serious complications. Botox is contraindicated if:
Patients have allergic reactions or hypersensitivity reactions to botulinum toxin (type A);
Patients experience inflammation of dermal tissues around the targeted area of the treatment;
Patients suffer from severe health problems, such as urinary tract infections, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.;
And so on.
Moreover, Botox injections should not be administered if patients are currently taking incompatible medications or undergoing incompatible treatments.
On a side note: Botox should not be used in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics, spectinomycin, or other drugs that prevent neuromuscular transmission.
Side Effects
Patients may have some side effects after Botox injections. It may appear after a few hours or even weeks. If you have observed such reaction after the procedure, inform the doctor about it immediately.
There may be such Botox side effects:
Vision problems;
General muscle weakness;
Sometimes dizziness.
Please note that the Botox vial may appear to be empty prior to reconstitution because it contains a small amount of vacuum-dried Botox powder that looks like clear crystals.
The potency Units of Botox are specific to the preparation and assay method utilized. They are not interchangeable with other preparations of Botulinum Toxin products. Therefore, units of biological activity of Botox can not be compared into units of any other Botulinum Toxin products assessed with any other specific assay method.
Storage Conditions
In most cases, the shelf life of Botox does not exceed three years if the below-mentioned storage conditions have been met:
The product should be stored within the temperature range between 2 and 8 degrees Celcius;
If needed, the product might also be frozen under the temperature of -5 degrees Celcius. In such a case, however, it has to be used within four hours after the reconstitution.
